Our Derby based client designs and manufactures high quality specialised products for the aerospace and turbo-machinery industries. Due to growth they want to recruit a skilled Spark Erosion Machinist to join their talented Engineering team.

The main objective of the role is to set, program and operate Spark Erosion (EDM & WEDM) machines.

We are seeking someone with a recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship or a time served Toolmaker.


  • Setting, Programming and Operation of Spark Erosion (EDM & WEDM) machines.
  • As required (dependant on skills) also undertaking CNC and Conventional Milling, CNC and Conventional Turning, drilling, surface grinding, fast hole erosion, band saws and other ancillary toolmaking machines and equipment.
  •  Read & Interpret engineering drawings and be able to program accordingly.
  • Work to tight tolerances from engineering drawings.
  •  Meet Customers specifications & requirements, correct drawing interpretation and accurate marking out of work.
  • Ensuring that work meets quality & technical guidelines.
  • Perform in-process and final machine shop inspections of machined features / parts in accordance with applicable Quality & Engineering criteria to drawings and customer documents.
  • Provide advice & assistance to production engineers to establish and optimise best machining methods when required
  • Support production engineers with lead times and costing information
  • Support and train apprentices/new colleagues
  • Undertake day to day maintenance of machines and maintain quality working areas
  • Be able & willing to operate additional machines when required
  • Working to deadlines in order to meet customer requirements


  • Experience working within a precision engineering environment
  • Proven experience in the setting and operation of Spark Erosion (EDM & WEDM) machines. Preferably with Sodick experience, although not essential.
  • Experience working with exotic alloys and understanding the properties of materials
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
  • Understanding of CAD/CAM is desirable
  • Strong team skills and ability to work unsupervised
