Instrumentation Technician – Mechanical Engineering / Assembly

Based: Derby, East Midlands

OVERVIEW:

An exceptional opportunity has arisen for an Instrumentation Assembly Technician to join a world leader in the design, manufacture, supply and support of high quality specialised products and services for the aerospace and turbo-machinery industries.

We are seeking a mechanically biased Engineering Technician to undertake the assembly and instrumentation of precision components.

The role involves the assembly / fitting of instrumentation devices that involve precise tolerances and great attention to detail. Much of the work involves low volume / one-offs / prototypes, which creates a varied but challenging role.

THE ROLE

  • Assemble a wide range of products including rakes, probes, pyrometers and telemetry units – following specifications and engineering drawings.
  • Bench fitting to assemble test rig components and accessories.
  • Working accurately with exotic materials, utilising appropriate techniques such as welding, brazing, soldering, bonding, potting and thermal spraying.
  • Applications of multiple instrumentation to customer parts
  • High and low temperature strain gauge application.
  • Produce and Install Thermocouples.
  • Working to tight tolerances.
  • Ensuring that work meets cost, quality and technical guidelines.
  • Be willing to undertake further training as required to meet the needs of the business.
  • To undertake day to day maintenance of equipment and working area, ensuring a clean and safe working environment is maintained at all times.
  • To be able and willing to operate basic machinery on occasions.
  • Multi-tasking capabilities, utilising the latest technologies and processes..

CANDIDATE PROFILE

  • Time served recognised Mechanical Engineering Apprenticeship (desirable)
  • Experience of working within a precision engineering/manufacturing environment (desirable)
  • Able to interpret precise engineering drawings and tolerances
  • Strong team skills and ability to work unsupervised
  • Able to work to timescales and deadlines
  • Excellent hand-eye coordination
  • Ability to work proactively, with a positive approach to issue resolution
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally on occasions
  • Keen to learn new skills and develop new processes

To meet the needs of the business the following training may be required to be undertaken:

  • Welding
  • Brazing
  • Soldering
  • Ceramic cement application
  • Thermal spraying
  • Strain Gauge application
  • Forklift Licence
  • First Aid at Work
  • Fire Marshall Training
  • Gantry crane/lifting training
  • Training on any new machines installed and new techniques/processes

DETAILS

  • Job Sector: Aerospace
  • Job Type: Permanent
  • Starting Salary: Negotiable up to approx £29,000 for basic hours + scope for overtime at higher rate
  • Excellent working hours: 7.30am – 4.15pm (Mon – Thurs) & 7.30am to 12pm (Fri)
